Beyond the Mountains at the Locarno Festival

After the world premiere at the 14th edition of the IndieLisboa last May, the second short film by Miguel Moraes Cabral has its international premiere in the Fuori concorso section of the Locarno Festival.

A love letter to Trás-os-Montes, the narrative unfolds around a film crew looking for stories in the north of the country. In the words of Miguel Moraes Cabral this is "the story of a search in unknown lands. is the story of a quest in unknown lands. The gaze at the other is fuelled by the imagination and by fragments of other gazes that have wandered the same space before.  Can we only see what we observe? And do we observe nothing but what was already in our mind?

Beyond the Mountains features Miguel Nunes, João Pedro Bénard, Beatriz Brás, Sérgio Coragem and Isac Graça as cast and is the first fiction produced by Garden Films. The film was supported by the Portuguese Film Institute - ICA, the GDA Foundation, the Vimioso City Council, and co-produced with Bear Team Production and Le Fresnoy - Studio National des Arts Contemporains.

The Fuori concorso selection offers recent work – feature films and shorts, film essays, documentaries – by well-established filmmakers, out of competition, presented mostly as world or international premiere. In the previous edition, in 2016, this section included, among others, Cinema, Manoel de Oliveira and Me, by João Botelho, and The Hunchback by Gabriel Abrantes and Ben Rivers.

The 70th edition of the Locarno Festival will take place from 2 to 12 August in Switzerland. The director and his team will attend the festival to present the film.
