The Shift in Venice [13/09/2020]

The Shift, the latest film by the young director Laura Carreira, with distribution ensured by Portugal Film - International Portuguese Film Agency, was part of the official selection of the 77th Mostra Internazionale D'Arte Cinematografica La Biennale di Venezia 2020, which ran from 2 to September 12th.

The film was part of the Orizzonti section that focuses on works that represent the latest aesthetic and expressive trends in international cinema. This section has a particular focus on debut films, with independent features and young talents not yet established.

In her note of intentions, the director says that "the idea that we live as free individuals never seemed to me to be true. Our chronic dependence on work and the insecurity felt by so many is a reality that cinema should represent and to which I want my films to contribute. The Shift is a portrait of that addiction from the perspective of a young woman who sees her life derail in an instant without being able to do anything to prevent it. "

On the last day of the festival, the film team present at the ceremony was surprised by the announcement from the jury of the Orizzonti section, chaired by Claire Denis and composed by Oskar Alegria, Francesca Comencini, Katriel Schory and Christine Vachon, that elected The Shift as the Venice Film Festival's candidate at the European Film Awards 2020, thus becoming the 5th Portuguese film to appear on a list of 21 European nominees.

Laura Carreira is a Portuguese writer and director, born in Porto and residing in Scotland. She completed the Audiovisual Communication course at the António Arroio School of Arts, in Lisbon, and graduated in Film Directing at the University of Edinburgh.
Her first short film, 'Red Hill', was selected for several international film festivals and was considered one of the seven best short films present at the Clermont-Ferrand International Festival 2019 by the international film magazine Sight & Sound. The film was awarded the New Visions Award at the 73rd Edinburgh International Film Festival, nominated for the BAFTA Scotland Awards 2019 as 'Best Short Film' and for the BIFA Awards 2019. Still in 2019, Laura Carreira was chosen to integrate the BellRock writing residence where he is working on his first feature film.
