Nyo Vweta Nafta by Ico Costa is selected for the short film competition in Rotterdam [20/01/2017]

Nyo Vweta Nafta, the fifth short film by Ico Costa, and the first since he finished his training at Le Fresnoy (Studio National des Arts Contemporains) in France, is selected for the short film competition at Rotterdam Film Festival, which begins on January 25th, 2017 and runs until February 5th. Ico Costa's previous work has been in major international festivals, but it is the first time that one of his films is in competition at IFFR, one of the most prestigious international festivals.

Edited by Ico Costa and Eduardo Williams, Nyo Vweta Nafta was filmed in Mozambique, in Inhambane and Maputo, and narrates several stories that cross one another in the freshness of daily life and the aspirations of its characters: a man is looking for a girl named Nafta in a market in Maputo; In Inhambane Zacarias works as a domestic and dreams of being a singer, while King Best courts his girlfriend; Three boys extract nectar from the coconut trees and fantasize about a life elsewhere.

Nyo Vweta Nafta is the result of the extensive and in-depth work of Ico Costa in Inhambane and Maputo, where he developed and directed the film from his own experience and relationship with the local population. "I walked through the city, through the fields, through the beaches, I heard conversations in the streets, I met people, I accompanied kids in their daily wanderings. Everybody talked about girls and the desire to someday leave, get some change in odd jobs and go to South Africa to get rich. The film combines small episodes among several characters who are just themselves", says the director.

Produced by Terrafeme Filmes and Ico Costa, with the support of the Film Support Fund of IndieLisboa, Lusófona University of Humanities and Technologies, Universidad del Cine (Argentina), Un Puma (Argentina), Positivo Moçambique Association and of Kanema productions (Mozambique), and distributed by Portugal Film - Portuguese Film Agency, Nyo Vweta Nafta is the only Portuguese short film in competition at the International Film Festival of Rotterdam 2017 and is part of the 2017 catalogue of Portugal Film, which continues to focus on directors with the required talent to raise even more the recognition of Portuguese cinema. [20/01/2017]
