Super Natural wins FIPRESCI award at Berlinale [20/02/2022]
Jorge Jácome, who has already performed at the Berlin Film Festival in 2019, with the short “Past Perfect”, received this Wednesday (16) the Fipresci critics award, with “Super Natural”. The feature film was featured on the poster of the non-competitive Forum section, which brings together a set of more empirical works or works that amplify precepts of fiction and documentary.In a statement from the producer Ukbar Filmes and the distributor Portugal Film, the Portuguese director says that “receiving this recognition from Fipresci is really special and a great honor”. The Portuguese work is based on the communion of landscapes on the island of Madeira and the company “Dançando com a Diferença”, which promotes artistic inclusion by integrating people with and without disabilities.
The production's premiere in Berlin, on Friday, was marked by the presence of the team and members of the dance company. However, the Madeiran association returned to the island before the award was given. “Here in Berlin it's just me and the cinematographer, Marta Simões, but as the film itself says: we're always here and everywhere”, adds the 34-year-old director.
Initially, it was designed to be a stage show by Teatro Praga, in conjunction with the inclusive art association “Dançando com a Diferença”. The premiere was scheduled for 2020, but the pandemic dictated a different course for production. Jorge Jácome joined the embryonic project and together they adapted the ideas to make it into a film.
According to the synopsis, the artistic work “guides the viewer through contexts, geographies, historical curiosities, video clips, confessions and moments of humor”, triggering the idea that the natural, “whether of a body or an object, is always more complex”. than it appears to be”. “It's thinking about the idea of natural as something that is expanded, that is, that the norms and limitations of what we understand as being natural for us, is much more interesting the more we open up possibilities to think about it”, he explained.
