The Nothing Factory wins FIPRESCI award in Cannes 2017

Following its world premiere in the Directors' Fortnight of the Cannes Film Festival, Pedro Pinho's The Nothing Factory was awarded the prestigious FIPRESCI Prize by the International Federation of Film Critics.

The Nothing Factory had its first screening in the parallel section the Directors' Fortnight on May 25th, with a reprise on May 26th, having been received with an emotional ovation that lasted for seven minutes after the premiere.

At the awards ceremony, after the thank you speech, Pedro Pinho left an important message to the Portuguese Minister of Culture: "SECA is the department responsible for the selection of the juries of the state fundings to support cinema in Portugal. At the moment it is taken by the interests of the market, and films like ours are strongly threatened in Portugal."

In an interview with Cineuropa, the Artistic Director of the Directors’ Fortnight, Édouard Waintrop stated " We are witnessing some sort of worldwide trend towards neo-realism, which can also be seen in the Portuguese film The Nothing Factory by Portuguese director Pedro Pinho, which tells the story of a group of workers struggling against a factory relocation using an incredible range of cinematic genres: it’s practically a thriller at the beginning, becoming intimate, political, social, taking a brief detour into musical comedy, etc."

The FIPRESCI Jury in Cannes awards three prizes: two in the Official Selection - one for the Competition and one for the Un Certain Regard - and the third one for either The Critics Week or the Directors Fortnight. In addition to Alissa Simon (Variety, USA), who was the president, the jury was composed by Thomas Aïdan (France), Rodrigo Fonseca (Brazil), Barbara Lorey de Lacharrière (France), Pierre Pageau (Canada), Eva Peydró (Spain), Silvana Silvestri (Italy), Mode Steinkjer (Norway) and Vidyashankar Jois (India).

The Nothing Factory was produced by TerratremeFilmes, has international sales by Memento Films International, and festival distribution by Portugal Film - International Portuguese Film Agency. The 70th Cannes Film Festival took place from 18th to 28th May 2017.
